Rainwater Systems Explained
To direct water away from a buildings base a Rainwater system is normally used. By keeping Rainwater away from the main building we help protect against leaks, erosion, warring of painted areas, water draining into the basement. Collected water can also be used for task such as watering the garden.
Cast iron, aluminum, steel, copper, zinc, plastics (PVC), GRP and wood are all used to manufacture guttering systems.
Rainwater gutters collect water from the roof and drain it down a leader pipe to the bottom of the building where it is collected or directed to a drainage system. A rainwater collection system for water carried from guttering may be a barrel or a cistern.
A combination of the following components make up a Rainwater System.
Gutters - the horizontal pipe that sits on the roof edge and collects the water as it drains off the tiles. Different styles and shapes of guttering are produced depending on the size and decorative finish required. They are referred to as profiles.
Pipes - used to drain the water from the roof level to the ground. The down pipes needs to follow the contours of the building so are made up of sections connected by a series of joints.
Hoppers - used to channel other pipes into the down pipe.
Accessories - brackets, clips, ends and outlets are used to connect the rainwater system together and to secure it to the building.
Solid hoods, screens and louvers are used to act as a screen that allows water to drain away but catches solid debris such as leaves and moss.
Maintenance is normally restricted to the occasional clean out on most modern systems. Water can leak down the side of the building if the gutters become blocked or clogged up. Blocked gutters can also lead to stagnant water build up which allows grasses and weeds to grow in the gutter. If you take good care of your guttering it should last you for years to come
